Get Out

2017’s “Get Out”, by Jordan Peele.
Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Catherine Keener.

We meet an interracial couple (Kaluuya and Williams), who decide to go and meet the Caucasian woman’s parents (Whitford and Keener) for the first time after 5 months of dating. While making the drive to the parent’s cabin, the young couple hit a deer, an omen for the weekend (a la 2016’s “The Invitation”). While dealing with the white police, we see righteous indignation from the Caucasian girlfriend, when she sees her black boyfriend being treated the way most black people are treated. They proceed to the parents’ cabin.
Pretty much from the get go, we know that things at the house aren’t right, and that’s before the parent’s friends show up for some of the most unsettling bingo ever committed to film. Peele continuously sets up tension for the slow motion climatic reveal. All the right things are said, “I would have voted for Obama a third term if I could have”, “But I do know of Tiger Woods", "etc”. But the things we keep locked deep down, always bubble up to the surface. And as far as extreme left wing plots go, “Get Out”s is pretty extreme (if scientifically questionable).

Peele keeps things tight and lets his horror movie genre appreciation run deep, as the weirdness continues to escalate. To his credit, “Get Out” is more than just a rumination on white flight and how racism is alive and well in our culture today. Peele (who also wrote the film) tries to go for something that only the true believers attempt, and the effect at times is hypnotizing.
