2016's "Toni Erdmann"
(Germany), written and directed by Maren Ada.
Starring Sandra Huller, Peter
Simonischek, and Wichael Wittenborn.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best
Foreign Film.
“TE” is probably the longest shaggy dog
joke ever committed to celluloid, a comedy with a simple premise. Sandra Huller
plays a career woman who has a hatchet man job for a corporation in Romania.
She has a father who decides to invent an alter ego, and drop in on his
daughter at inopportune times to spice things up.
Featuring plenty of moments of hilarity (including an off site office party that gets
spontaneously strange, and some inspired karaoke), not to mention healthy doses
of awkwardness, it reminded me of this year's "The Handmaiden" in how
it's tone would fluidly shift throughout the movie. “TE” made many critic's
best of the year lists, and is rated 94/100 on Metacritic.
While enjoyable and at times hilarious, the
running time sometimes wears out it's welcome at a little over 2.5 hours.
3.5/5
